Community Centre News – February – March 2020

A warm welcome to the Community Centre news page. We are hoping the Centre will continue to be busy and well used during this year. There is currently a vacant weekly slot in the Kings Hall on Friday mornings, which we would like to fill.  There are also other slots available in the smaller Troughton and Storeton rooms. All the rooms are well equipped and the Centre is fully accessible.

The Centre gained its ‘five star’ hygiene rating last year following an unannounced visit from an environmental health officer from Wirral Council. This is great news and means that we maintain excellent standards. Thanks to everyone who contributes to keeping the Centre clean and tidy and long may it continue!

We are always getting requests to run children’s birthday parties at the weekend, particularly on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon for around three hours. This needs someone to be at the Centre to open up, then check that the building has been properly cleaned and secured when everyone has left. You don’t need to be present for the whole event. Sarah and Julie currently share this role between them, but demand always outstrips supply and this could be a useful source of extra revenue for the Centre. It is a shame that the Centre is not used more regularly at the weekends, apart from Sunday’s Church related activities. However, more people are needed to help out. There is a £25 fee for the role. If you are interested, please talk to Sarah or Julie.

The grounds behind the Centre will continue to be developed this year with an environmental theme to fit in with our aim to gain ‘gold’ status with

Eco-Church. Plans are afoot to dig a wild life pond and plant wild flower seeds. We will need volunteers for this so please contact the Parish Office if you are interested in joining in with this important work.

The Centre foyer is to be given a mini make-over. The front of the building will be re-painted as it is looking a bit sad. Leaflet holders will be wall mounted in the foyer to tidy them up. If you have any ideas about how it can be made more appealing, please get in touch.

October 2019 News

A warm welcome to the Community

Centre news page. This month, the theme is food and eating. There is a

saying that ‘you don’t need a silver fork to eat good food’, and the Centre has hosted a few events recently, where sharing food with love is a definite theme. This

includes the Maundy Thursday Supper, the Passover Supper, the Christian Aid Breakfast, Rose Queen Afternoon Tea and Carers’ Lunch.

If you are interested in learning how to cook or developing your culinary skills in a friendly relaxed environment, the 3L’s Class may be for you. John and Sue Dodd run this class and this month, they have contributed this piece for the Newsletter:

‘Tasty Cooking. Friday afternoon

Friday afternoons in the centre are filled with interesting smells and aromas. They hit you from the front door and have tormented the people in the office for a number of years now. The food course is run by 3L’s for those over the age of 55. As members of the course put it ‘Sue, though having spent a

career teaching tends to guide the course rather than lecture to us’. All sorts of people, of a wide range of ages and skill levels, from those claiming to

only be able to burn toast, to those who have raised and fed families who want to try different things and extend their skills. It is not just a cookery course, but a chance to meet friends and socialise. The general banter and laughter is not mentioned on the course description but is an important part of the afternoon. There must be something to it as some members have been coming back term after term for over 4 years now and when places

become available, they are soon filled. Besides learning new skills and

recipes, having a laugh with friends, everyone goes home with a meal and pudding for two at the end of the afternoon.’

Community Centre News – December 19 – January 20

A warm welcome to the Community Centre news page.

At the beginning of December, it will be one year since Sarah and Julie started working at the Centre. Time has certainly flown, we have both learned a lot and there have been quite a few changes in the Centre. We are blessed with a Centre that is always brimming with activity due to the variety of groups and activities which take place and this one of the most enjoyable aspects of working here.

This year, we have lost some groups and gained others. More recently, a Tai Chi class has started in the Troughton Room. It takes place on Mondays at 1pm for one hour. It is open to all ages and abilities and you can go at your own pace. Each class costs £5 and you don’t need to book. In addition, ‘On Broadway’, a dance based ladies’ exercise class,  now runs on Wednesday evenings at 8pm for one hour. You will need to sign up online at ………Our local Labour councillors, Jerry Williams and Tony  Cottier, now have a drop-in surgery on Friday evenings between 6pm and 7pm. If you have any issues you would like to discuss with them, please come along and make your views known.

We are always getting requests to run children’s birthday parties at the weekend, particularly on a Saturday afternoon. This needs someone to be at the Centre to open up, then check the building has been properly cleaned and secured when everyone has left. You don’t need to be present for the whole event, which usually lasts around three hours. Sarah and Julie share this role between them, but some more people are needed to help out. There is a £25 fee for the role. If you are interested, please talk to Sarah or Julie.

It is traditional to make New Year’s resolutions as the year draws to an end.  We are planning to run wedding receptions for people who marry in the Church, starting in 2020. They will be in the form of either afternoon teas or ‘bubbly’ receptions in the Centre. Helen Byrne, Eunice, Sarah and Julie are in the process of contacting suppliers, putting ideas together and developing a web page.

Spring 2019

A warm welcome to the Community Centre news page. This month, the theme is yoga, as we have a regular class for adults plus a new class for pregnant women.

Siobhan Mangan, who runs the adult class has contributed this piece: ‘Ready to make a change? Our welcoming Yoga group comes together every Friday evening, to take part in a restorative style yoga, which means you are able to develop flexibility and strength in a gentle nurturing way, as the pace is slow and Yoga props such as blankets, pillows and bolsters are used to help you ease into Yoga poses with confidence and at your own pace. Each week has a theme such as ‘Yoga and the lower back’, ‘Yoga and Anxiety’ or ‘Yoga and managing stress.’ Last month’s special was ‘Yoga and Essential Oils’, where everyone learnt about essential oils, their uses and tried them during the class, to aid relaxation. Other classes are coming such as Beginners’ Yoga on a Saturday morning and early morning Yoga.

All equipment is provided, just bring yourself and dress in loose clothing, such as a tracksuit and tee-shirt. Please allow at least 2-3 hours after a meal before doing Yoga.

For more information or to book onto a class, just call Siobhan on mobile number 07803 306880 or glance at my website shangrilayoga.co.uk.’

A new class started up at the Centre in March. YogaBellies offers relaxed, supportive classes for prenatal women. Holistic practices and yogic techniques are used to guide women through their pregnancy. No previous yoga experience is necessary.

Mats and pillows are provided. The class runs on a Wednesday evening starting at 8 p.m. in the Troughton Room. Becky Talbot, who runs the class lives locally and has two children. If you would like further information, please ring Becky on 07378 319270 or email her at becky@yogabellies.co.uk.
